ARE YOU PICKING UP ON THE CLUES?
.
.
Streams are like brainteasers. You know there’s a right answer, because you know people catch fish there. The challenge, though, is figuring out the right combination of time, place, pattern, and presentation in order to crack that code. Fortunately, like many brainteasers, the river will give us clues to help us “solve” it. But are you using them to your advantage?
.
.
Riverbanks take on a range of appearances, but usually they consist of some combination of trees, grass, shrubbery, and rocks. Since these stream features aren’t in the water, you could easily walk right past them and pay them no mind. How is a bush that is well-removed from the water going to help me find and catch fish? .
.
The answer is not the bush itself, but rather, what’s in the bush. If you’re observant, spider webs, tree branches, and the undersides of rocks can be fantastic clues for finding if there is, or recently has been, a hatch of a certain insect. If you can see the casings of mayflies that have molted, you know that there has recently been a mayfly hatch, which means there are mayfly nymphs in the river, and there are likely to be more hatching soon. If you find a stonefly crawling along the shallow streamside rocks, you know that you might need to size up your presentation and imitate the larger profile of a Stone. .
.
Being aware of your surroundings and being observant is ALWAYS a good strategy. Not only will you pick up on small clues that will inevitably help you understand the water you’re fishing, but you’re likely to enjoy the experience more. So next time you’re on the water, move a bit slower. Take it in a bit more. You’ll catch more fish, and have a better time doing it.

Here we have a presentation of the new and improved #dirtychickenfly as well as the rainbow trout imitation that I tied up. Both have a articulated tail for nice movement in the water and the #esoxdubbing for the heads of the flies. This coming up weekend I will get to test out all my new flies on some open water 🤘🤘😁 I cannot wait !

THE DEBATE ON RISE FORMS
.
.
In the quest to find rising fish and identify the prevailing pattern, one of the clues that has traditionally been promoted is observing rise forms to help you identify what fish are feeding on. More recently, I’ve heard more people challenge this conventional wisdom, taking the stance rise forms are not particularly indicative of the type of insect that is being eaten, but instead are a product of a variety of other factors like current speed and water depth. .
.
The argument for the insect camp goes something like this: depending on the type of insect and the stage of the hatch, trout will rise to them in different ways. For example, we often hear about the “caddis rise”, which refers to particularly splashy, acrobatic rises that allegedly come from trout chasing caddis as they emerge from the water, or that a trout’s head emerging completely from the water is a sign that it is taking a high riding mayfly dun, like in this photo by @risingtroutphotography. .
.
The argument against is based on the idea that a trout rise is predicated far more on the environment and stretch of water than it is on the specific food source. In deep water runs, for example, trout must come up from substantial depth to rise for an insect. This rapid acceleration can lead to more explosive, water-clearing jumps that could be targeted at a wide variety of insects, not just caddis.
.
.
Personally, I take a stance that is somewhere in the middle. I think it would be naive to unequivocally say that because you’ve seen a couple of splashy rises, that the fish are feeding on caddis and caddis only. They could be, but it could also be a variety of other factors, like depth and current speed, causing fish to rise hard and fast. With that said, I think there is validity in using them as a clue. In one man’s opinion, rise forms are a piece in the puzzle, but not the whole picture. They have validity, but like anything, if you make all your bets on a one dimensional indicator, you might just be led astray.
.
.
What are your thoughts on rise forms? How much do they matter, or do they not at all? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear what you think :)

YOU GOTTA KNOW WHERE THEY’RE GOING
.
.
Fish don’t get big enough for us to target for them by being dumb and gullible. They’re adept at avoiding danger, or even the intimation of it. The bigger the fish, the more scrutinous and wise they become, picking up on the smallest of clues that something unnatural is awry. Not only are they weary, but they know where to go when they’re in trouble. .
.
A fish is in no greater trouble than when it feels your hook penetrate its mouth. Its first reaction will be to bolt to cover, writhing to free itself from the mysteriously sharp mayfly nymph it just ingested. In this video by @looknfishy, watch the way this fish fights. It has one destination in mind, and one destination only: getting under that undercut bank. As soon as it’s hooked, the fish makes a beeline to the bank, where it knows it can nestle itself deep underneath the overhead cover of the undercut. .
.
As an angler, recognizing these sorts of havens can help you anticipate a fish’s next move when you hook it. With smaller trout like the one in this video, you may not need to be as strategic with how you play the fish (although you might, on light enough tackle). But with big, powerful fighters, knowledge of the surrounding cover is incredibly important so that you can immediately try to steer the fish towards open water, where you stand a much higher chance of landing it.
.
.
While I’ve never fished for these beasts, tarpon immediately come to mind. Fishing around mangroves for fast, powerful fish that are prone to aggressive runs is like throwing stones in a glass house, but you do what you must in order to get a shot at one of these trophy fish. In these types of circumstances, being mindful of the fish’s primary plan of defense could spell the difference between the fish of a lifetime and the fish story of a lifetime, so make sure you’re anticipating where the fish will go, and your results will speak for themselves. .
.

PAYING IT FORWARD
.
.
This. This video is what it’s all about. @livingflylegacy taking his son fishing, supporting him, and teaching him how it’s done. I think most of us have a story like this. Whether it was a parent, a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle - someone important in our lives introduced us to the sport. They planted a seed that has grown into a lifelong passion, something that brings us excitement, challenge, and endless memories. .
.
In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our ever-connected society, and to overlook the simpler things like fishing and spending time outdoors. Our sport is niche, but if we want it to persist, we need to pass it on. I can’t think of a more therapeutic, relaxing, and rewarding pastime to share with a loved one than the serenity of standing on a beautiful body of water, performing the graceful dance that is fly casting. .
.
I realize that I’m probably preaching to the choir here. As a community of anglers that is passionate about what we do, I think we all have some inclination to pass it on to the people we love. Keep doing this. Tell your non-angler friends. Let people know what you’re passionate about. Not only will you feel more fulfilled by expressing yourself and sharing what you love to do, but you might just inspire a lifetime of fishing for someone new. And that, as we all know, is a gift worth giving. .

I cast with either hand, as a kayak fly fisherman and with fishing rivers I had to learn to cast with both hands depending on which way the wind was coming from, this helps me so much now with fishing any bank or side of the river, the wind is not a factor anymore unless it’s over 20mph and neither hand is dominant anymore. Dale called this pike a Fur Burger 🍔😆🤘😎 he wouldn’t let go of the #dirtychickenfly !

UNDERSTANDING STREAM DYNAMICS
.
.
You’ve heard me talk about fishing the upstream side of rocks before, but upon seeing this photo from @flyfishingkiwi, I just had to bring it up again.
.
.
The crystal clear New Zealand water in this photo allows you to see the stream’s contour in remarkable detail. If any of us walked up to the bank on this stretch of river, the first thing to catch our eye would undoubtedly be the large stump deflecting the current (assuming there wasn’t a chunky brown just sitting there for all to see). Spots like this are obvious, but too often we only pay attention to the downstream pocket, and not the lesser known upstream lie. With water this clear, it becomes obvious that the upstream side has a pocket of deep, calm water, but in murkier or faster moving rivers, it may not be so conspicuous. .
.
This is where the topic of hydrodynamics comes into play. Understanding how water flows is critical to identifying fish-holding spots. Because it is the breaks in the current that harbor fish, we need to understand what those breaks look like, and the circumstances in which they exist. .
.
The upstream pocket is a good example of this. Over time, the continuous deflection of current against the immovable stump has caused a repetitive, erosive current pattern, which has dug out the upstream side of the obstruction. The water flows into the stump, but because it can’t flow through it or over it, it has nowhere to go but down or backwards. When you visualize it this way, it’s pretty easy to understand how this would create a patch of calm water, since the prevailing current is being offset by the water flowing in the opposite direction. .
.
This way of thinking about current flow is a key to successfully reading water because it helps you visualize where the deepest, calmest, or most protected lies will be. Water can’t flow through solid objects, so when it hits them, it has to find an alternate route. Whether it is water crashing down from a waterfall that creates a deeply-dug waterfall pool, or the thin feeding lane that forms behind the trunk of a fallen tree, recognizing the detours that water must take is key in recognizing trout lies.
.

HOW SMALL IS TOO SMALL?
.
.
We all can picture the small, idyllic mountain stream, stuffed to the brim with native, wild brook trout. It’s a fantasy that has played over in the minds of fly anglers for generations. We like to imagine that every scenic trickle is going to hold trout, but for many new anglers, actually standing on the bank of one of these streams is a rude awakening. The water is shallow and clear, and it doesn’t seem possible that anything is living in such a small creek. While this is certainly true of streams that rely on seasonal runoff, many anglers underestimate the ability of small stream trout to go undetected, and the capacity for small streams to actually support them. .
.
Fish are extraordinarily good at blending in with their surroundings. On small streams like this one fished by @flyfish_colorado, a little trout will tuck itself in an undercut or between two rocks, making it incredibly difficult to spot. In fact, if you relied solely on sight fishing to identify the spots you were going to target, you’d be in for a slow day on the water. But how can you tell if there are fish there in the first place? .
.
While we don’t know for sure, it’s fair to assume that this stream is spring-fed. Spring-fed creeks have constant year-round flows, so they’re a great bet to hold trout, despite their small size. Some small streams will all but dry up when spring runoff subsides, making it near impossible to support a substantial fish population. Spring-fed creeks also tend to be higher in nutrients, which enriches the entire food chain, from insects up to the trout themselves. .
.
If you don’t know if a stream is spring-fed, looking at maximum depth can also be indicative of the stream’s year-round flow. If you see that their are fairly deep, narrow channels worn into the streambed, this points to the stream running year-round. However, submerged grass and moss, on the other hand, indicate high water, and that the normal flow, if any, is likely much shallower. These clues can help you decipher if a stream is too small. Or, if you like adventure, you can proceed with uncertainty, trying your luck to see for yourself if the stream holds fish.

BETTER STREAMER RETRIEVES
.
.
There’s more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes. That couldn’t be more true than when fishing streamers. No other fly boasts the same level of versatility. You can swing them, drift them, or bomb the banks with them from a drift boat. Or, you go cast them 45 degrees upstream, and let the current help you animate your retrieve, the way @flyfish_colorado does in this video (shot by @mikeyb_1125). .
.
There are a few advantages to this type of retrieve, but one that is particularly key is how the current works in your favor. A struggling baitfish, which is typically what you’re imitating, is likely not the strongest swimmer in the world. That’s why it’s vulnerable, after all. Mixed with your strips and intermittent twitches, the streamer darts along while being carried downstream, resembling a little fish that is doing its best to fight the current. If you’ve ever seen a small fish struggle to hold a straight line, you’ll know the type of animation I’m describing. As they move across the current, they dart along on their way, but not without being pushed downstream. These weak swimmers are what you’re trying to imitate with this type of presentation, and when you drift past a lie, the trout are going to recognize that weakness and capitalize. At least that’s the plan, anyway. .

BIG FISH, SUBTLE TAKE
.
.
This video by @jensenflyfishing is a masterpiece, and there is certainly plenty to talk about. But upon watching this clip, there’s one key lesson that I think is worth pulling out and discussing a bit more in depth: how subtle the strike was.
.
.
It’s not often that you can get such a clear, overhead shot of a fish before, during, and after it takes a nymph. Even less often that you can capture a fish of this size doing so. That makes it all the more remarkable that even with such a great angle, clear water, and perfect timing, it was still difficult to see when the fish actually had taken the fly.
.
.
Outside of the small jump of the line, if you’re watching the fish itself, you can’t even see the exact moment the fish takes the fly, and it only becomes clear once the fish is hooked. This is a testament to how subtly fish can strike, even those of impressive size. .
.
Whether it’s a calm, quiet slurp of a dry fly or emerger, or the light tick you feel when fishing a nymph, big fish are surprisingly good at going undetected when they take a fly. This puts the onus on us to be extra perceptive and focused on our presentation at all times. Sometimes, those “just-in-case” hooksets will end up feeling like you hooked a retaining wall... you just have to pull the trigger. .

This is my #dirtychickenfly in a buford style. Doesn’t look as appealing as some of my other flies until it hits the water 🤘😎 then it comes to life. This one is a double articulation and 10 inches in length dressed lightly for easy casting. 4/0 main hook, 28mm shank and a stinger for the tail section. I believe that I get a lot more strikes on the pause and I think it is important that the fly continues to move on the pause, having a short hair fly stops this action, this is why I’m not a fan of game changers (short hair ones), on the pause they stop working sort of like a crank bait in a way while a long hair pike/musky fly flows in the water no matter what 🤘

HATCHES ON THE HORIZON
.
.
March is a tough month. In some climates, it’s fishing time. In others, it’s a perpetual tease of warm and cold. For many of us, we’re just getting the first signs of thaw that make standing out on the river slightly more bearable, and if we bundle up enough, we can scratch our fishing itch. I couldn’t think of a better picture to sum up this pivotal time than this one by @jakobbur and @jessepackwood. The mist lifting off the water, the snow and ice capping the tops of rocks, and the sun shining, albeit cold, on the land below. The hatches are on the horizon. Time to dust off the rods, stock up on flies, and dig for those old insulated neoprene waders. It’s almost time to go fishing. .
.
Magra consolazione 🙄
Nuovo spot, nuovi pesci e nuove esche, peccato aver perso bei esemplari... La pesca era impostata bene!!!

3 TIPS FOR STALKING SMALL STREAM TROUT
.
.
There’s a special place in my heart for tiny mountain streams and the little brook trout that inhabit them. They may not be big, but they sure are feisty, and a whole lot of fun. Whether you’re going after Brookies or any other species in small stream environments, here are 3 tips to keep in mind when you’re out there:
.
.
1. Stay out of the water (if you can)
.
.
In this awesome shot by @davidcannonphotography, the angler is clearly avoiding standing in the water, and there’s good reason why.
.
.
Not only does he have better leverage to drift his fly through the feeding zone, but he’s minimizing his presence to the fish. Typically, the rule is to stay as low and as out of sight as possible. This rule still applies, but in such tight quarters, wading would likely be far more disruptive to the spot he’s trying to fish. Better to stay off to the side as much as possible and hide in the brush if you can. .
.
2. Keep casting to a minimum
.
.
Small stream fishing isn’t the idyllic, graceful dance that we see in the movies or on big rivers. This is guerrilla warfare, hand-to-hand combat. You’ll be casting from weird angles, using your rod to make drifts, and using bow and arrow casts. You’ll control your fly more like a puppet-master than an expert fly caster. All this due to the overhanging branches and abundance of potential snags. The more you can use your rod’s reach to drift through potential lies, the more realistic your presentation will look and the less time you’ll spend untangling your line.
.
.
3. Work thoroughly
.
.
On small streams, there aren’t a ton of really obvious spots. Sure, you’ll see the obvious undercuts and overhangs, but trust that there are more fish in there than just in those couple of hotbeds. In streams with lots of boulders, it’s not uncommon for fish to nestle themselves in tiny patches of calm water between the rocks. Nearly invisible from above the water’s surface, the only way to fish these spots is to drift through them. So with that in mind, make some drifts through the main runs, even if you can’t see a specific lie. It might just be worth it.

HOLDING ON THROUGH THE HEAD SHAKES
.
.
This is what we live for. Setting the hook at an ever-so-subtle twitch of the line, only to be met with the dense weight of a nice fish on the other end. Your rod bows over, you feel the fish’s weight testing the backbone of your rod, and you feel those thumping headshakes. Bliss.
.
.
But then that fish takes off for the surface. It’s one thing to bask in those glorious headshakes when they’re happening beneath the surface, but airborne, they create a hold-your-breath moment that can either exhilarate or disappoint. .
.
To prevent experiencing the latter, it’s imperative to keep your line taut. Not tight, but definitely not slack. With a loose connection to your fly, you’re inviting the fish the throw it right back in your face. That moderate tension in between, though, puts the odds in your favor. .
.
In this particular video, @gilbertrowley keeps just enough tension on that beautiful brown to keep it from throwing the hook, but not so much that he risks snapping his tippet. He’s not using a particularly large fly here, which helps, but had he been using a large, bulky streamer, the importance of keeping that tension would’ve been amplified twofold. .
.
.
The bigger the bait, the more likely it is to swing in the air as the fish shakes its head. On a slack line, that swinging vastly increasing the chances that the hook falls out. The weight of the fly, combined with the numerous angles it is being pulled from, could have the same effect as you backing the hook out from the fish’s mouth with your fingers. With your line taut, however, the bait will not be able to swing and flop in the same way, reducing the chances that it gets thrown.
.
.
.
A fairly rudimentary tip, I know, but it’s important. When you feel a fish moving up to jump, you have to make sure that you’re not allowing slack in your line. Even with every precaution, you’ll still lose fish; that’s just the nature of the sport. But in doing so, you’ll be be doing everything in your power to keep the fish on the line, which is all you can really shoot for at the end of the day.

SHOUTOUT TO THE LADY ANGLERS
.
.
In honor of #internationalwomensday, I want to give a little shout out to all the women out there helping us get to #5050onthewater. In particular, I want to highlight @redonthefly, who not only lets us keep up with her fly fishing journey with posts of beautiful fish, but shows tremendous authenticity and vulnerability about the challenges of becoming a better fly angler. .
.
.
Her posts are not only interesting and unique, but they’re incredibly relatable. There are a whole lot of people too proud to talk with her style of candor, and yet she routinely displays the ability to step back and laugh at herself, not taking herself too seriously. That’s the kind of positivity we need more of... So hats off to you Jamie.
.
.
.
And to all the lady anglers out there, sharing your journeys and professing your passion for the sport: in your own small way, you’re pushing for progress and inspiring others to share what they love. Keep doing you, and we’ll keep supporting you. .
